What a Mild Winter Means for Springtime Pests

spring pests 1 1

People aren’t the only ones enjoying the warmer-than-average winter season this year. These warm and wet conditions create the perfect breeding ground for pests like ticks, ants and termites to get an early start to their peak season. These pests are capable of transmitting diseases to humans and pose significant threats to our health and well-being. Here are a few tips from Budget Pest Control:

Get the tick repellent and flea and tick collars ready, because we expect to see an increase in these annoying and dangerous pests this spring. Ticks carry Lyme disease, so be prepared and take precautions. During a mild winter, more adult ticks and larvae are able to survive due to the less extreme temperatures. More small animals survive too, like mice and squirrels, which tick larvae use to feed on and grow. This creates a larger tick population come spring.

Tips to Prevent

  • Mow your lawn regularly
  • Avoid overwatering your lawn
  • Keep your yard clean. Remove yard debris, Ticks like shady, moist areas.

An early start to warmer weather this year means an early start for ants. We can expect more ants, and will see more activity around homes than previous years.

Tips to Prevent

  • Keep your kitchen surfaces clean.
  • Consider a deep spring cleaning. Pull out your appliances, grab the scrub brush, and get all of the hidden areas where grease and other food debris often accumulate.
  • Store your open food in containers with tight-fitting lids so you are not attracting any ants or other pests.

Unlike many other insects, termites remain active throughout winter. However, they tend to tunnel deep underground or inside stumps to survive the cold. Once warmer temperatures arrive, termites will begin to swarm. During swarming, winged members of the colonies take off to reproduce and find new places to build nests. They’ll gravitate toward a location with rotting, water-damaged wood because that food source will be easier to chew and digest.

Tips to Prevent

  • Eliminate Moisture Problems, Repair leaking faucets, water pipes, and A/C units.
  • Divert water from foundation, keep gutters and downspouts clean, Get rid of standing water on roof.
  • Seal entry points around water and utility lines or pipes
