WASPS 1

Just like the cranky neighbor who doesn’t want to be disturbed. Ah, summer has arrived and you’re in the mood to party with friends on the deck for the evening. You remove your grill cover, crank on the propane tank, lift the up the hood, only to find a swarming torrent of yellow and black fury spewing forth from an open combed nest, ruining your barbeque. You immediately close the hood and skedaddle, but now that you’re behind the safety of your sliding-glass door, it seems like the party might be postponed. If you’ve got grilling fever and the party can’t stop, call Budget Pest Control about our Wasp Service!

Why do I have them? Wasps, like many creatures, don’t really enjoy spending winter in the cold and they really don’t like when anyone barges into their territory unannounced. So, with envious work ethic, they toil away every spring through summer to build a complicated nest structure to protect their precious queen. The unfortunate part of it all is that paper wasps will build a nest in pretty much any secluded area; grills, wall voids, cinder blocks, your attic, even the old hollows of trees. If you’ve got space, they want to fill it.

What can I do to help the situation? Although it is common sense, we strongly recommend letting professionals handle any sort of stinging insect situation. The most proactive step you can take to solve or prevent issues with stinging insects is exclusion. During the cooler months of the year, inspect areas of both the interior and exterior of your home for gaps large enough for these insects to penetrate and close them in the proper way, whether by caulking, meshing or even simply removing a possible nesting area.

Is the treatment safe? Our Wasp Control is safe for humans and pets, although with any stinging insect treatment, we recommend evacuation of the immediate area for a short time to avoid any possible contact with stinging insects. Our experienced technicians will advise you on any other precautions you may need to take. But rest assured, your summer barbeque need not be plagued with unwelcome visitors (except uncle ralph!).

I’d really rather not have them, so how do I get rid of these things? There are also many risks involved. To avoid the risk of being stung, call us. We have the protective equipment needed along with safe and effective methods of not only eliminating these dangerous insects, but rather the nest as whole, guaranteeing your family’s safety from a potential mishap. Our Wasp Control uses a combination of a residual treatments and a penetrating gas agent to expand deep into the nesting site.

Call Budget Pest Control 24/7 After a chat with one of our friendly, informative office personnel, you will be better armed than uncle ralph to handle a nasty stinging wasp nest. And better yet…Our Wasp Service runs 7 days a week!

Stats

There are many different types of wasps in our area; the cicada killer wasp, European paper wasp, the mud dauber and a few more. Most of these insects will be of a similar size, typically ranging from about ¾ to 1 inch. There are few outliers like the cicada killer wasp and European hornet, which are ½ to 2 inches in size, but these are much rarer in our area. Colors of these insects may range from a solid chocolate brown color in some species to a striped yellow and black color in others.

Did You Know?
  • The Italian motorbike company Piaggio’s most famous brand of scooter is the Vespa, which in Italian (and Latin) means wasp. The name was given when one of the designers looked at a prototype and exclaimed “Sembra una vespa! (It resembles a wasp!)”
  • Most wasps will show 2 hierarchical functions in a nest; one is to allow a single reproducing individual to emerge after harsh overwintering, and the second is to exclude all non-reproductive members out during winter. What this means is that wasps will lay down their lives in service to their queen, working tirelessly through the year to build a chamber warm enough for her to survive her winter hibernation.
  • Wasps are some of the most aggressive insects on the planet, and with the expansion of human territories, many entomologists believe they’re quickly evolving to become to be more wary of any foreign contact.
Myths & Facts

MYTH: Swatting at, shooting water at or spraying at wasps are the reason they attack you.
FACT: Wasps are very territorial creatures. It’s believed that coming within 12-18 feet of a nest makes you a perceived threat.

MYTH: All wasps are aggressive and will sting when provoked.
FACT: While a larger percentage of wasps will sting when they’re intruded upon, there are a few species such as the Grass-carrying Wasp that will not defend a nest if it is disturbed (but will reportedly sting if handled.)

Signs of An Infestation

Presence of a nest is the most recognizable sign of a wasp infestation. Wasp nests may come in several shapes; including some that resemble pots, umbrellas, combs, footballs, all of which will be of a light-to-dark brown color and most commonly found at higher elevations.

Swarming activity is another definite sign of an infestation, especially in warmer months. Most swarming will be near a build site for these insects, and it is highly recommended that you do not attempt to seal an opening that they may be entering.
