There are many different types of wasps in our area; the cicada killer wasp, European paper wasp, the mud dauber and a few more. Most of these insects will be of a similar size, typically ranging from about ¾ to 1 inch. There are few outliers like the cicada killer wasp and European hornet, which are ½ to 2 inches in size, but these are much rarer in our area. Colors of these insects may range from a solid chocolate brown color in some species to a striped yellow and black color in others.

- The Italian motorbike company Piaggio’s most famous brand of scooter is the Vespa, which in Italian (and Latin) means wasp. The name was given when one of the designers looked at a prototype and exclaimed “Sembra una vespa! (It resembles a wasp!)”
- Most wasps will show 2 hierarchical functions in a nest; one is to allow a single reproducing individual to emerge after harsh overwintering, and the second is to exclude all non-reproductive members out during winter. What this means is that wasps will lay down their lives in service to their queen, working tirelessly through the year to build a chamber warm enough for her to survive her winter hibernation.

Myths & Facts
MYTH: Swatting at, shooting water at or spraying at wasps are the reason they attack you.
FACT: Wasps are very territorial creatures. It’s believed that coming within 12-18 feet of a nest makes you a perceived threat.
MYTH: All wasps are aggressive and will sting when provoked.
FACT: While a larger percentage of wasps will sting when they’re intruded upon, there are a few species such as the Grass-carrying Wasp that will not defend a nest if it is disturbed (but will reportedly sting if handled.)
Signs of An Infestation
Presence of a nest is the most recognizable sign of a wasp infestation. Wasp nests may come in several shapes; including some that resemble pots, umbrellas, combs, footballs, all of which will be of a light-to-dark brown color and most commonly found at higher elevations.
Swarming activity is another definite sign of an infestation, especially in warmer months. Most swarming will be near a build site for these insects, and it is highly recommended that you do not attempt to seal an opening that they may be entering.
