Pittsburgh Fruit Fly Seer Gnat Control Exterminator
In your house? We have all had them. This is a familiar situation we’ve all faced at one time or another. It’s late summer and you’ve purchased a bunch of fruits and veggies. A week goes by, and due to your day to day, they’re still sitting in a bowl, looking like a melted still life. Slowly and surely your home is becoming filled with these tiny little insects buzzing near windows, the fruit and your trash can. My friend, you’ve got vinegar flies, more commonly known as fruit flies and because these little pests can reproduce in your home, you got a problem.
Why do I have them? It’s probably a safe bet that you’ve got decaying fruit & vegetables or fermenting liquids somewhere inside or just outside of your home, which are perfect feeding grounds for these pests. At times, they’ll also infest your sink drains if you have a tendency to use your garbage disposal frequently. They’ll come in either by following you in from outside or by being brought in on objects, deposit their larvae on these aforementioned materials to have a quick bite and continue their song and dance.
What can I do to help the situation? The easiest ways to curb the continued breeding habits of these little guys are to ensure that any organic material including old fruits and veggies are disposed of tightly, beer cans or wine bottles are thoroughly rinsed before you’ve recycled them, and eliminate any gaps in screen doors/windows by patching or replacing the damaged areas. Other ways to help are to keep drains running smoothly as well as regularly cleaning trash and recycling bins of any collected material.

Fruit flies are typically 3-4 mm in size, and are yellow brown to dark brown in color. They’re known quite well for their large red compound eyes. Fruit flies are by far one of the smallest insects we treat for, but in large, one of the biggest nuisances.
- The name fruit fly is actually a misnomer; the insect’s true name is the vinegar fly.
- Fruit flies come in many varieties, but the Hawaiian cousin of this species is unique. This breed of fruit fly can be as large as a common house fly, but equal in numbers. And you thought the small ones were a problem!
- Their Latin name “Drosophila” means dew-loving, hence their association with moisture and rot.
MYTH: Fruit flies only lay their eggs on fruit.
FACT: The larvae will feast on any type of yeast found in rotting or liquefying items. Over-ripe fruits and vegetables produce these yeasts as they begin to break down.
MYTH: Using bug-bombs in your home will eliminate all of the fruit flies in the area.
FACT: Bug bombs will kill the adults in the vicinity, but the major issue with the fruit fly is its larva. As these larvae hatch, they mature very quickly meaning that an infestation can wax and wane quickly.
- Concentrations of fruit flies in a home, room or small area. These flies will be attracted to light sources.Factors for infestation can be a buildup of scum in pipework, fermenting liquids from various sources that not been cleaned, old fruit or vegetables and comfortable climate.
